Marvin Stamm/Mike Holober Duo

  • Soapbox Gallery 636 Dean Street Brooklyn, NY, 11238 United States (map)

Legendary trumpeter Marvin Stamm and GRAMMY-nominated pianist Mike Holober team up in a duo performance that showcases their unique musical connection. For the past decade the two have been playing regular afternoon sessions at Mike’s home studio, nurturing a close friendship and a deeply interactive approach to improvisation. Performing original compositions and works from the jazz repertoire, the duo’s effortlessly intuitive connection will be on full display in a soon to be released recording (Big Miles Records).

Marvin Stamm began his career as a featured soloist with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, and later touring with the Woody Herman Orchestra. After moving to NYC in the late 1960’s, he gained considerable recognition playing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and the Duke Pearson Big Band. He also performed with Frank Sinatra and the Benny Goodman Sextet in the 1970’s, and was a member of the American Jazz Orchestra, the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, and the Bob Mintzer Big Band. A first-call studio musician, Stamm has recorded with many jazz luminaries, as well as popular artists such as Steely Dan and Paul McCartney. He has released multiple recordings as a soloist with artists such as Bob Mintzer, Terry Clarke, Phil Markowitz, Lincoln Goines, Bill Charlap, and long-time collaborator Bill Mays, as well as with the Soph/Stamm Project featuring Ed Soph on drums, Bill Mays on piano, and Rufus Reid on bass.

Described by Downbeat Magazine as “one of the finest modern composer/arrangers of our time” Mike Holober has released eight recordings as a leader, and can be heard on over 70 recordings as a sideman.   He was awarded the 2022 American Academy of Arts and Letters Andrew Imbrie Award in Music, and his big band recording, “Mike Holober & The Gotham Jazz Orchestra: Hiding Out” (ZOHO Music, 2019) was nominated for a 2020 GRAMMY® Award (Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album). Mike has served at the helm of some of the worlds most renowned large ensembles, including the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, the WDR Big Band and the hr-Big Band.  During his tenure with these ensembles he curated, arranged, and conducted concerts with jazz artists such as Joe Lovano, Kate McGarry, Randy Brecker, Paquito D’Rivera, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Al Foster, Terje Rypdal, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Miguel Zenon, Avishai Cohen, and Eli Degibri.

Mike and Marvin’s musical collaboration extends well beyond their work as a duo. Marvin’s unique musical voice inspired multiple pieces that Mike wrote for the Westchester Jazz Orchestra and the Gotham Jazz Orchestra, and Marvin also performs with Mike’s octet, “Mike Holober & Balancing Act.” Their live recording of Mike’s Chamber Music America New Jazz Works commission “Don’t Let Go” was released in April 2022 (Sunnyside Records) and earned 4.5 stars from Downbeat Magazine. Mike and Marvin also co-lead the Marvin Stamm/Mike Holober Quartet, where they are joined by Mike McGuirk on bass and Dennis Mackrel on drums. Their 2020 live recording at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar earned a Downbeat Magazine Editor’s Pick (Big Mile Records).
